In the modern era like now, you will see the internet connection which is provided by the copper wire and the fiber optic wire. At first, the internet connection is supported by using the copper wire. However, after the fiber optic wire was introduced, many internet service providers move to use the fiber optic wire.

Many internet service providers believe the wire can become the better medium for the new communication in the future. The providers use the wire for the internet connection with the high-speed, cable connections for many uses, and the telephone. Like other technologies, this wire has the advantages and disadvantages.

The fiber wire uses the light waves in transferring the data. It is made from the plastic fibers as the core of the cable or the glass material. This material then is covered with the cladding layer which is designed to reflect the light back to the core and the buffer coating protecting the fibers from any damage which can be harmful for the wire system.

By using the wire, you can enjoy some advantages such as the high-speed. You will get the faster data transmission if you use this wire. Many users state that they feel amazed for the amazing speed provided by the wire. You will not face the problems which you usually face when you use the copper wire like the RF interference. Usually, the users of the coaxial cabling will face the problem in the data transmission because of the Radio Frequency. This technology is not susceptible for the RF interference.

When you use the fiber optic wire, you can enjoy the data transmission in the long distances without experiencing the data loss. However, this technology also has the disadvantages for example the costs. If you use this technology, you need to pay the costs which are more than the double price of the broadband connections. Some people will not be able to get this technology because it is not provided in all areas. It can be said that it is the biggest disadvantages.

When testing loss in a fiber optic link, some basic principles must be kept in mind all the time.

1.The testing wavelength should always be the same as the working wavelength. Because optical fiber loss varies with light wavelength, you will get incorrect result if your measuring wavelength is different from the actual working wavelength. For example, if a system is designed for 1550nm but you test it with 1310nm light source and power meter, the result will not be correct.

2.The testing light source should be the same as the intended working lightwave equipment light source. If the system is designed for a LED source, you should test it with a LED source. If the system is designed for multimode laser light, you should use a multimode laser light source for testing. This is also true for single mode laser light source.

Fiber optic equipment used in a loss testing

In a basic loss testing setup, four types of test equipment are needed. They are the light source, the power meter, the reference patch cables and the adapter (mating sleeve).

Here are some considerations when choosing your equipment.

The light source should have the same wavelength as the operating equipment, proper mode (multimode or single mode, should be same as the operating equipment), type (LED or laser, same as the operating equipment) and proper connector.

The power meter should have the same wavelength as the light source, proper connector and calibrated.

The reference patch cables should be high quality with know loss, proper connectors and be the same type as the fiber plant being tested.

.

Fiber Optic Coupler are also known as fiber distribution panels. Patch panel’s function is to terminate the fiber optic cable and provide access to the cable’s individual fibers for cross connection.

Fiber Optic Coupler can use fiber patch cables to cross-connect, connect to fiber optic communication equipment or test the individual fibers in the fiber cable.

A fiber patch panel usually is composed of two parts, the compartment that contains fiber adapters (bulkhead receptacles), and the compartment that contains fiber optic splice trays and excess fiber cables.

If you want a even neater cable management, you can also use a fiber patch cable management tray to neatly store and manage excessive fiber patch cable lengths.

Optical fibers from workstations or from other wiring closets terminate in termination boxes. The termination boxes provide a patch point for a small number of connections, but larger installations will have a separate patching location that serves all of the incoming and outgoing fiber cables.

A fiber patch panel consists of an array of duplex SC adapters, hybrid adapters, or Small Form Factor (SFF) jacks. If the entire installation, including the fiber optic hubs, repeaters, or network adapters, uses the same type of fiber optic connectors, then the array can be made of compatible adapters or jacks.

To convert between fiber connector types, you need a hybrid adapter or a conversion cable. A hybrid adapter is a passive coupler that joins two different connector types, while a conversion cable simply has one connector type on one end and the other type on the opposite end.

Fiber patch panels provide a convenient way to rearrange fiber cable connections and circuits. A simple patch panel is a metal frame containing bushings in which fiber optic cable connectors plug in on either side. One side of the panel is usually fixed, meaning that the fiber cables are not intended to be disconnected. On the other side of the panel, fiber cables can be connected and disconnected to arrange the circuits as required.

The need for fiber optic couplers

We use electronic couplers all the time: such as a telephone coupler which lets you connect both a telephone and a fax machine to the same telephone line. Or a CATV coupler which lets you connect several TV sets to a single cable from Comcast. Basically you can buy these couplers from Home Depot or other electronic retailers.

Optical couplers have the same functionality as electronic couplers: They split the signal to multiple points(devices). Fiber optic couplers are needed for tapping(monitoring the signal quality) or more complex telecommunication systems which require more than simple point-to-point connections, such as ring architectures, bus architectures and star architectures.

:: Passive couplers and active couplers

Fiber optic couplers can be either active or passive devices. The difference between active and passive couplers is that a passive coupler redistributes the optical signal without optical-to-electrical conversion. Active couplers are electronic devices that split or combine the signal electrically and use fiber optic detectors and sources for input and output.

:: The difference between electronic couplers and fiber optic couplers

Electronic couplers are easy to make because electric current flows as long as you have physical contact between conductors. But optical signal is in a completely different domain. You have to align the tiny optical fiber cores precisely (9um for single mode and 50um or 62.5um for multimode fibers), so there won’t be a huge power loss when you split the signal.

.

Communication industry has been stormed by the advent of fiber optic cabling. The key advantages that are offered by these cables include greater bandwidth, light in weight, small size and definitely has more flexibility. In addition to it, the core reason behind its popularity is that advanced technology used by these cables.

As a matter of fact, the whole fiber optic technology makes use of optical fibers. These optical fibers are thin, ultra-flexible and transparent and transmit the light between two ends of the fiber quality as compared to copper wire. So, with their superior technology these are more appropriate for smooth communication between far distances. In addition to it, the usage of these cables results in much less loss of signals which means uninterrupted and smooth communication. To tell you the truth, currently more than 80% of far distance data traffic is transmitted by using this smart optical fiber technology. Total internal reflection through a light source transmitted by a fiber cable is the main principal on which whole fiber optic communication is based. Mainly, quality plastic material is used for making these cables. However, these can be made from plastic clad silica or glass in accordance with the budget and application for which these cables are being used. Copper wires used electronic signals to transmit signals whereas light pulses are being used in fiber optics cables to transmit signals.

Other advantages of fiber optic cables include it is inexpensive and suits properly to extremely thin diameters in the range between 0.8mm to 40mm. Being extremely thin, a number of fibers can be joint together letting many connections to run in the same cable. It provides clearer phone connections as well as TV receptions, as the light signals which are in the same cable do not hamper each other’s functioning. This ultimately results into much less loss of signals. These cables can also be called as the safer ones because no electricity passes through these cables and hence there will not be any fire issues.

In comparison with other wires like copper wires, these cables are definitely the superior ones because these are light weighted and small sized. With above mentioned advantages, it’s evident that why fiber optics cables are being used in many telecommunications and computer networks. These cables are regarded as the most trusted and best replacement of copper wires.

The optical circulator has similar function and design as the optical isolator. An optical circulator is an nonreciprocal passive device that directs light sequentially from port 1 to port 2, from port 2 to port 3, and so on in only one direction. The operation of a circulator is similar to that of an isolator except its constructions is more complex. Like the isolator, its uses polarization to do its job.

The typical construction of an circulator consists of a number of walk-off polarizers, half-wave plates and Faraday rotators. Typically an optical ciruclator has three or four ports.

A variety of circulators are available commercially. They have low insertion loss, high isolation over a wide wavelength range, minimal polarization dependent loss, and low polarization mode dispersion.

The typical insertion loss of an isolator is about 0.6dB, channel isolation is over 40dB, optical return loss is over 50dB and polarization dependent loss is lower than 0.1dB.

The applications of optical ciruclators

In advanced optical communication systems, circulators are used for bi-directional transmissions, WDM networks, fiber amplifier systems, and for optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) measurements.

Optical circulators are essential compoents of optical communication systems. They enable the routing of light from one optical fiber or waveguide to another based upon the direction of light propagation.

More information

Optical ciruculators extend the basic idea behind an optical isolator and add more functionality to the device. A circulator does not disgard the backward propagating light, as an isolator does, but directs it to another port, thus resulting in a three-port device in the simplest configuration. More ports can be added if one wants to redirect light coming from the third port to a fourth port. Even six ports circulators exist which direct light to different ports in a circular fashion depending on which port light enters.

You may guess that with the increasing of ports, the design becomes increasingly complex. You are absolutely correct on that guess. A second layer of complexity is added for polarization-independent circulators because they must split the incoming light from any port into its orthogonally polarized components and process each component separately.

In general, a circulator requires a large number of parts. The most important component in a polarization independent circulator is the beam displacer. Beam displacer is made from a strongly birefringent medium such that it displaces the orthogonally polarized components spatially by different amounts.

In spite of their complexity, optical circulators are available commercially in a relatively compact size with fiber pigtails on each end. Insertion losses are also very acceptable for such complex devices..

In fiber optic communication,10G Optical Ethernet interface technology in recent years has been considerable development, However, due to the high cost, 10-Gbps application does not, as projected in the market spread rapidly. 10-Gbps technology based on copper wire is also plagued by low port density issues caused by the power loss and crosstalk, resulting in its market-oriented process difficult. In this context, the emergence of a new program. Solutions with high port density, low-cost SFP + optical transceivers for enterprise users to provide more cost-effective technology in the past 10-Gbps Ethernet upgrade.

As SFP+ (enhanced small form-factor pluggable) becomes more pervasive,we want to know it more and more easy.Just as its name implies, the SFP+ transceiver is an upgraded version of the small form-factor pluggable transceiver. The SFP+ Transceiver is more compact in size than its predecessors, X2, XENPAK and XFP, making it the perfect solution for higher port density installations. Fiberstore supply the SFP+ transceivers are also not only efficient, but cost effective, with a power consumption of less than 1W.

The SFP+ module is a variant of the SFP optical transceiver. The SFP+ module form factor is 30% smaller, uses less power, requires fewer components, and is less expensive than the 10-Gigabit small form-factor pluggable module (XFP) form factor, which was already smaller and used less power than the XAUI-based XENPAK and X2 form factors.

The SFP+ form factor significantly simplifies the functionality of the 10G optical module by moving such functions as clock and data recovery (CDR), electronic dispersion compensation (EDC), 10G SERDES, and signal conditioning that traditionally resided inside the XAUI-based modules into 10GbE PHY devices and line cards. As a result, the modules are smaller, consume less power, and allow increased port density while being less expensive than XFP. Some products on the market now offer 48 ports or more in a rack.

Each SFP+ module houses an optical transmitter and receiver. One end of the module is an SERDES framer interface (SFI) serial interconnect, which handles differential signals up to 10 Gbits/s. The other end is an optical connection that complies with the 10GbE and 8GFC standards. The SFP+ active cable has electrical input and outputs with an optical transmitter and receiver internal to the cable. Active cables with SFP+ terminations also can be copper-based with integrated pre-emphasis and equalization..

What Are the Benefits of Fiber Optic Signal Routing?

Fiber optic cables have been a big part of the information age. When it comes to high-speed Internet and high-definition TV in homes, all of the latest advances in Internet speed and HD video start with the fiber optic cables laid by communications companies over the last couple decades. The reason these large corporations invested in this technology is because of how reliable, secure and quick it is. And considering how many users are involved, having a stable and efficient information infrastructure is obviously important.

So if the communication companies are operating on what can be called a “macro” level, linking together customers across great distances, could this cabling be important and useful on a more “micro” level? For hospitals, academic institutions, or businesses, KVM and signal routing throughout their operation is also vital. For some such venues – the aforementioned medical campus or perhaps a government or defense outfit – maintaining an ultra-secure means of communication and signal routing is key. It’s so crucial that typical signal routing solutions, such as Cat5e/6 cables, just won’t cut it. The information being moved is too sensitive to be compromised. And that’s where fiber optic cables come in.

There are several key benefits to this upgrade. First and foremost, fiber optic cables are immune to electromagnetic interference, allowing them to provide secure transmission and routing. Second, fiber optic cables eliminate the need for bulky cabling and additional equipment to boost video signal, both of which are helpful for routing through small areas. Third, these cable extensions extensions offer long-distance routing solutions.

That level of security is important for national security in defense applications. In medical and academic venues, that’s important for privacy and confidentiality. Businesses are looking for similar protections, whether that’s to ward off hackers, corporate espionage, or other breaches of security. And with long distance needs, these cinnections allow large government, medical, academic and corporate campuses to install a stellar communications system that handles all of their criteria..

Fiber Optics Splicing is now a much more plus much more common skill dependence on cabling technicians. Fiber-optic cables may need to be spliced together for several reasons-for example, to produce a link of the particular length, or to repair a busted cable or connection. A web link of 10 km can be installed by splicing several fiber-optic cables together. The installer will then fulfill the distance requirement and get away from buying a new fiber-optic cable. Splices could possibly be required at building entrances, wiring closets, couplers, and literally any intermediate point from a transmitter and receiver. If we used the fiber optic splicer to fiber optic cable splicing, our greatest dilemma is the preservation of the company’s signal.

An exclusive touch is necessary to splice fiber optic cable since the glass fibers are encased with fiber insulation sealed in the plastic coating. Unlike copper, the fibers are delicate and is easily broken by using excessive pressure to chop the casing while splicing cables to fiber connectors.

The splicing process begins by preparing each fiber end for fusion. Fusion splicing necessitates that all protective coatings be removed from the ends of each and every fiber. The fiber will then be cleaved using the score-and-break method. Each fiber face to achieve an excellent optical finish by cleaving and polishing the fiber end. Prior to the connection is made, get rid of each fiber have to have an effortless finish that’s clear of defects including hackles, lips, and fractures. These defects, along with other impurities and dirt customize the geometrical propagation patterns of light and cause scattering. The quality of each fiber end is inspected using a microscope. In fusion splicing, splice loss is a direct purpose of the angles and excellence of the two fiber-end faces.

The fusion splicing is just one of a splice cables method. The fundamental fusion-splicing apparatus includes two fixtures which the fibers are mounted with two electrodes. An inspection microscope aids in the position with the prepared fiber ends in a fusion-splicing apparatus. The fibers are placed in the apparatus, aligned, and then fused together. Initially, fiber optic fusion splicer used nichrome wire as the atomizer to melt or fuse fibers together. The heater is undoubtedly an electric arc that softens two butted fiber ends and permits the fibers to become fused together.

In Mechanical Splicing, mechanical splices are only alignment devices, built to hold the two fiber ends in a precisely aligned position thus enabling light to pass through from fiber in the other. Mechanical splicing is done in an optical junction the location where the fibers are precisely aligned and located in place by the self-contained assembly, not only a permanent bond. This technique aligns both fiber ends to some common centerline, aligning their cores and so the light can pass from one fiber to an alternative. This is accomplished using a portable workstation that is utilized to get ready each fiber end. That preparation includes stripping a skinny layer of plastic coating from your fiber core before its splicing.

Connecting two fiber-optic cables requires precise alignment from the mated fiber cores or spots within a single-mode fiber-optic cable. This can be required in order that the majority of the light is coupled in one fiber-optic cable across a junction to another fiber-optic cable. Actual contact relating to the fiber-optic cables is not even mandatory.

Splices could also be used as optical attenuators if you have a need to attenuate a high-powered signal. Splice losses all the way to 10.0 dB can be programmed and inserted in to the cable if desired. By doing this, the splice can become an in-line attenuator with all the characteristic non reflectance of the fusion splice. Typical fusion-splice losses can be estimated at 0.02 dB for loss-budget calculation purposes. Mechanical splices are typically implemented in the field, require little if any tooling, and give losses of around 0.5 to 0.75 dB.

FiberStore provides a comprehensive range of hand tools, network tool kits and consumables for the installation and maintenance of LAN, fibre optic and copper networks. Whether you require a punchdown tool, RJ45 / Cat 5 Crimping tool, fiber splicer or automatic wire stripper or a complete network tool kit, FiberStore has the right tools for your needs.
